Professorship for Economics in Rural Areas: Christian Hundt joins economic geography in Hanover and Höxter

Christian Hundt took up his appointment to the professorship for Economics in Rural Areas at the Institute of Economic and Cultural Geography in January 2022. He prevailed in a joint appointment procedure of Leibniz Universität Hannover and the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute and was thus simultaneously appointed head of the newly founded Thünen Institute of Rural Economics.

Back to the roots

With his appointment, Christian Hundt returns to his former place of work: In 2012, he received his doctorate in economic geography on a topic related to start-up research at Leibniz Universität Hannover. Positions at the Ruhr University Bochum and at the Technical University of Dortmund followed, where he held a substitute professorship in economics from 2014 to 2016. Since 2018, he worked at the Thünen Institute for Rural Areas in Braunschweig and habilitated at the Ruhr University Bochum in May 2021 with a thesis on regional economic resilience in Germany and Europe.

Chances: new research institute

The Institute for Innovation and Value Creation is located in Höxter in eastern Westphalia and is one of a total of 15 expert units of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute. As a federal research institute within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), the Thühnen Institute develops scientifically solid decision support tools for politicians. With his team, Mr Hundt provides the newly founded specialised institute an distinctive research profile.

With their focus on economics of rural areas, Christian Hundt and the institute he heads both enrich the research and teaching of the Institute for Economic and Cultural Geography and also create ties to other departments at Leibniz Universität Hannover. Scientific cooperation between the new specialist institute and Leibniz Universität Hannover will be continuously intensified in the future.
