Invitation as associate scientist: Fatty Acid Research Institute honours Dr. Jan Philipp Schuchardt

The Fatty Acid Research Institute (FARI) in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, USA has invited PD Dr Jan Philipp Schuchardt from the Institute of Food Science and Human Nutrition to become an associate scientist.

The FARI pools resources and expertise of international scientists to promote the study of the health effects of fatty acids. Fatty acid levels in humans and animals can provide information about their health. For example, diets deficient in marine omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) can increase risk for major health problems like heart disease, stroke, loss of mental function, and have been shown to increase risk for premature death.

Dr. Schuchardt has been working on this topic for a long time: In Prof. Andreas Hahn''s research group on Nutrition Physiology and Human Nutrition, he studies, among other things, the metabolism of omega-3 fatty acids and their physiological effects.

In a current nutritional study, Dr. Schuchardt, together with the Medical University in Utrecht and the Max Planck Centre for Physics and Medicine in Erlangen, is investigating the extent to which omega-3 fatty acids influence the functions of erythrocytes. Volunteers (men and women) between the ages of 20 and 50 are being sought for this study. Further information (in German): Nutrition study calls for participation
