Gender and Diversity Day 2021 discussed unconscious behaviour patterns

On 19.05.2021, the first Gender and Diversity Day in eight years took place at the Faculty of Natural Sciences. Organised by the team of the Faculty''s Equal Opportunities Officer, introduced by Vice Dean Prof. Dr. Kirschning and professionally moderated by Sabine Jürgens-Krenzin, the online event serves as a forum for exchange and dialogue and an impulse for cultural change within the Faculty.

The day was thematically accompanied by keynote speeches by Prof. Dr Marc Lerchenmüller (University of Mannheim) and Dr Devasmita Chakraverty (Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, India). With the presentations on their research work "Impostor Syndrome" (Chakraverty) and the "Gender Citation Gap" (Lerchenmüller) the speakers gave the participants an insight into unconscious habits, especially in academia. These behavioural patterns continued to be the topic of intensive discussions in mini-workshops throughout the day.

The team of the Equal Opportunities Officer would like to thank all participants for their interest and lively participation. The event confirmed the existing interest in the topic among members of the faculty. At the same time, some need for improvement in the area of gender equality and cultural diversity was highlighted, which the team of the Equal Opportunities Officer will address in cooperation with all faculty members. Only in this way, a long-term and sustainable cultural change can succeed.
