Grattis! Andreas Kirschning holds Tage Erlander Guest Professorship for 2027

When effort is rewarded: Prof. Erdélyi (on the left) and Prof. Kirschning are delighted with the successful grant.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Kirschning from the Institute of Organic Chemistry has been granted the prestigious Tage Erlander Visiting Professorship for 2027. The scholarship with a funding amount of SEK 2 million (around 190,000 EUR) is awarded by the Swedish Research Council and aims to promote international scientific exchange.

The visiting professorship is in tribute to the Swedish politician Tage Erlander (Swedish Prime Minister from 1946 to 1969), who is considered a passionate supporter of science and research. With the scholarship, universities are empowered to develop a specialised field by appointing an internationally prominent researcher for a limited period of time. Prof Máté Erdélyi, head of department for the department of Chemistry - BMC in Uppsala, submitted the application for the professorship and nominated Andreas Kirschning. The award validates the high scientific quality of his work.

Mr. Kirschning will offer special one-week courses for doctoral students at the oldest Scandinavian university, Uppsala. These courses are designed to be of a hybrid nature and are therefore open to all doctoral students at Swedish universities. For the core of his visiting professorship, Mr Kirschning will establish a research and cooperation network with Swedish scientists in the field of chemoenzymatic syntheses with the aim of expanding the so-called terpenome. The natural substance class of terpenes plays an outstanding role in drug research - for example, the anti-cancer drug Taxol - but also in the fragrance and flavour industry, where menthol, for example, is of great importance.

Congratulations on this special honour!
