Research in the chemistry institutes focusses on:

  • the design, construction and analysis of new materials with defined functions
  • the synthesis and analysis of bioactive natural products and new medicines
  • biotechnology, tissue engineering, photobiocatalysis and computer applications in technical chemistry
  • the chemistry, biotechnology and analysis of food
  • the study of interfaces and developments in theoretical and computational chemistry

Chemistry in Hanover – a longstanding tradition

Chemical research and teaching at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Leibniz University Hannover are built on a long and strong tradition. With the growing importance of the chemical sciences at the beginning of the 20th century, the large chemistry building in Neo-Renaissance style was erected on Callinstraße between 1906 and 1909. It provided the then Chairs of Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Electrochemistry, and Technical Chemistry with a new and spacious home.

Today, the impressive historic building has been renovated, and together with adjacent modern buildings, it forms a campus for Chemistry and Life Sciences – home to six specialized chemical institutes that cover a wide range of disciplines and offer numerous modern laboratories and facilities for research and teaching. Thanks to specialization and close collaboration, they can develop innovative solutions for current and future societal challenges – from fundamental research to application-oriented projects.
