On 30 January 2026, Professor Dr. Andreas Kirschning, Institute of Organic Chemistry, was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Faculty of Science and Technology at Uppsala University during the university’s winter graduation ceremony.
Uppsala University, Sweden’s oldest university, confers honorary doctorates on individuals who have made exceptional scientific contributions or have rendered outstanding services to its research community. Honorary doctors traditionally receive their insignia at the formal Doctoral Degree Conferment Ceremony, which takes place twice a year. The title doctor honoris causa is primarily granted to international scientists with strong ties to Swedish research community. In Sweden, honorary degrees are awarded by individual faculties rather than the university’s central administration, making them an academic distinction bestowed by peers.
The Faculty of Science and Technology recognised Professor Kirschning for his internationally visible research and for his valuable contributions to strengthening scientific collaboration between Uppsala and the global academic community.
Outstanding contributions to synthetic chemistry
In its citation, the university noted that Professor Kirschning is internationally acclaimed for his work in synthetic organic chemistry, particularly for using natural products as building blocks for bioactive compounds. A hallmark of his research is the integration of classical organic synthesis with methods and technologies from neighbouring fields such as the life sciences and engineering.
